My Mrs' family are originally from Blekinge! We spent summer of 2019 around there and Ahus.

Re: Danish food - any good?
billywhitehorse, my wife is from Stockholm, but the family hail from Blekinge, smaland and gavle. I agree about Janssons frestelse, absolutely wonderful dish indeed. there are loads of different aquavit and Brannvin , but my personal favourite is Skane aquavit. beautiful stuff to wash down the herring as you know, especially at midsommar you have to sing along before every skal." helan gar "for example. those scadis, as someone said earlier really know how to celebrate ( and get pissed at the same time ). we had midsommar at the family sommarstuga ( summerhouse ) where they had the women and kids dancing round the maypole to the fiddlers and accordianists, then there was normal dancing on the boat jetty wher the big commuter boats used to drop off and pick up folk. those were the days indeed.

The best Smorgastarta I ever had was at Lisa på Torget in
Östermalmstorg, Stockholm.

Or an Elk steak at Kvarnen in Södermalm.

Jakehammer,

Given your choice of alcohol below - are your family from Skane? My other half is from there. Lund to be precise.
We have most of what you have.

The best Julbord we had was in a castle in Skane. At least 20 varieties of herring. My first taste of smoked eel.
No Christmas food complete without the Jansson's temptation.
(That's a potato and anchovy casserole)

Always been impressed by scandi food tbh. Meaty and hearty.

Kind of how ours would be if our ancestors weren't busy conquering the world instead of pissing about with camping and furniture like they do up there

Re: Danish food - any good?
my family is half Swedish, so i'm very lucky to have scandinavian food regularly. we have a family julbord at xmas and the same at easter and midsummer. and for birthdays we have what is known as a smorgas torta (sandwich cake) which is long bread cut lengthwise 3 or 4 slices, rammed with salad, prawns eggs, special majonnais etc, with swedish side dishes. it's all very filling. with beer and skana aquavit to wash it all down. followed by swedish cream torta and coffee. very difficult to move around for ages afterwards being absolutely stuffed. In Sweden a proper smorgasbord should take something like 3 or 4 hours to consume if it's done properly and plenty of conversation as well.. some things in life are just not meant to be rushed.

If you take away the curry powder, that's very similar to the mix I make to go with salt beef.

Can't even remember the food but I do remember that I couldn't walk the streets of Copenhagen without a really annoying Danny Kaye ear worm.
